If it helps in my MAME ROM folder I have four sub folders; CHD_MAME, ROM_MAME, SAMPLES_MAME and SL_MESS. In the SL_MESS folder I have all of the software list systems folders with their roms in each subfolder. I hope this helps? Hopefully my answer translates well into Italian and makes sense also...
