Unable to shoot in CarnEvil

i finally got the rom to load up and function after 5 hours of messing around, but the only problem is that none of the enemies will react to being shot at, none of my bullets work.  i'm just wondering if i did something wrong or if it's the file that isn't working right.  i'm on mame 0.235, if that helps.
