NAS build for ROM collecting

Hi guys

After years of collecting, the size of everything has started to exceed the storage space on my computer (>24tb).
It seems like a NAS is the next step to go, but I'm not sure what to look for...

It will mainly be used for storage and maintenance of my collection, including Clrmamepro/Romvault runs, crontabbed python scripts, scraping ++
My collection just keeps on growing, so I'm looking for something that can be gradually expanded.

I've looked at some 8-bay RAID6 arrays, but as far as I understand, these will take days to reconstruct and the hard drives will wear out faster.

Is it better to split things up into several smaller RAID arrays (one for MAME, one for TOSEC, ...)?

What kind of setup do you guys use?

And what kind of setup do you recommend?

I have a Buffalo TS1200D with 4x4Tb drives in a raid 5 configuration.

It works fine for my purposes

For your needs you'll four 10Tb drives.

Get a NAS with a SSD for an operating system.

If you can afford it put four 10Tb SSD's configured as raid 5-0

That will increase the speed of the array by loosing it's redundancy.

You may not need that since SSD's have no moving parts and tend to be reliable.

The drawback is the limits of the network speed.

I'm been using a Supermicro SYS-5028D-TN4T with Proxmox for the last couple of years with great results.  The board has dual 10GB copper connections, with one being used for a direct run to my mame cabinet.  8 Core, 16 Threads with four 12 GB drives under zfs raidz1-0.
